Soccer Hits the Road for Evansville

Sept. 17, 2003

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - The Otahkians are on the road again for a 2-game road trip. Southeast will face Evansville tomorrow, September 18 at 7:00pm. They will continue on the road to Indiana State on Sunday, September 21 for a noon game.

Scouting Evansville...The Purple Aces (0-4-1) come into the game on a 3-game losing streak and struggling offensively, as they have been held to only one goal all season long. That goal came from junior forward Tami Callis in their 2-1 loss at Indiana State. Their offensive struggle is in part due to a knee injury hampering senior forward Kristin Prom, the fourth leading scorer in school history. On the season they've fallen to Kansas 2-0, Indiana State 2-1, Illinois 1-0, and Purdue 0-8. The Purple Aces only non-loss game this year came against Memphis as they played them to a 0-0 draw. Last year the squad ended the season 3rd in the Missouri Valley Conference, posting an overall record of 6-13-1. The 2003 team returns 14 members from last's year's 19-member squad. The team is coached by Ron Rabb in his second year of coaching for Evansville.

Scouting Southeast....The Otahkians (3-1-2) are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against in-state rival Southwest Missouri State University last Sunday at home. Just 3 minutes into overtime, senior defender Valerie Henderson found the net for the game-wining goal on a 17-yd roller. Henderson is leading the team with 2 game-winning goals on the year. In other home action, Southeast also blew past IUPUI last week with a 4-1 victory. Southeast dominated the game as they controlled the ball almost the entire night. Before their home series last weekend, Southeast beat Ohio 2-1, tied Oakland 0-0, tied Memphis 1-1, and lost to 11th ranked Auburn 2-0 on the road. Currently, junior forward Marla Gianino and sophomore forward Lisa Schweppe are leading the offensive attack. Gianino currently has 17 shots and 3 assists, while teammate Schweppe has 16 shots, 1 goal, and 2 assists. Junior Erin Slattery is leading the team with 3 goals, but is currently sidelined with an injury. It is also questionable whether last season's leading scorer Erika Todd will play due to an injury she sustained early in the season.

What's up next...After facing Evansville the Otahkians will continue on the road with a game against Indiana State on September 21 at noon.
