Southeast Soccer Opens OVC Play On The Road

Sept. 23, 2004

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - After posting an impressive 5-2 non-conference record against outstanding competition, the Southeast Missouri State University women's soccer team opens Ohio Valley Conference play with a pair of road contests.

The Otahkians play at Tennessee Tech on Firday at 3 p.m. and at Austin peay on Sunday at 2 p.m.

"We are looking forward to the start of OVC competition," said Southeast coach Heather Nelson. "Tennessee Tech has gotten off to a good start under a new coach and with a lot of new players and so we really don't know what to expect. Austin Peay is coached by one of my former players at Florida State and assistant coach at Southeast, Kelly Poole, and so there won't be any surprises in that match."

Tennessee Tech is 4-2-1 on the season while Austin Peay is 5-2-1.

"Our club has played well during the non-conference schedule," Nelson said. "We have a history of playing well on the road. To be successful this weekend we need to be solid on defense and we need to keep throwing fresh forwards into the game to put pressure on the other team's defense."

Freshmen continue to play an increasing role for Southeast. Emily Newsham scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Air Force and added another goal in the 4-0 win over Arkansas State. Alaina Lacopo had three assists in the Air Force match and added another assist against Arkansas State.
