Soccer Hosts Lady Govs on Friday

Oct. 1, 2009

By Brett Maikowski, Southeast Missouri State Sports Information

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks will host the Austin Peay Lady Governors on Friday at 7 p.m. at Houck Stadium. Southeast is currently 5-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in Ohio Valley Conference competition, while APSU holds a 1-8-2, 0-1-1 OVC record this season.

Friday's match will be the 9th time the two teams have competed against each other with the Redhawks currently holding a 7-1 edge over the Lady Govs. The last time Austin Peay beat Southeast was in an overtime 1-0 win in 2006. In seven seasons, that has been the only goal the Lady Govs have scored against the Redhawks, as they have been shut out in the other seven matches and outscored by a 19-1 margin.

Scouting the Redhawks

Southeast opened OVC play last Sunday with a 1-1 tie against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. In the double overtime draw, senior defender Stephanie Kulavic scored her first collegiate goal of her career in the 30th minute. The goal came off a header from a corner kick off the foot of Lauren Lacopo.

Overall, the Redhawks have predominantly been a second half team, as 16 of their total 20 goals this season have come in the second half of the match. Freshman Bobbi Jo Schlick continues to lead the team in offense with four goals and an assist, giving her a total of nine points. Sophomore Katie Snelson and junior Ashley Runion have been instrumental in setting up goals this year as they share the team lead in assists with three apiece.

Scouting the Lady Govs

Austin Peay began OVC competition this past weekend with two home matches against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. The Lady Govs came out of the weekend with a 0-1-1 record falling 2-1 to MSU and battling to a scoreless tie with EKU.

APSU has struggled to get in the win column this year as they have lost seven consecutive matches following their lone 2-0 win over Cumberland back on September 1. The Lady Govs also trail the rest of the OVC in goals (7), assists (3), and points (17). Defensively, they have given up the most goals in the conference with 24 in 11 matches.

Alumni Game

Southeast's annual alumni game will take place this coming Sunday at 2 p.m. Come out to Houck Stadium and see how past Redhawks match up against the current team.
