Soccer Hosts Eastern Illinois In OVC Showdown

Oct. 11, 2007

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State soccer concludes a three-match homestand tomorrow night with an Ohio Valley Conference showdown against Eastern Illinois at Houck Stadium starting at 7 p.m. It is the Redhawks' only match of the week.

Southeast heads into the EIU match with a 7-2-1 season record and has posted a 4-0 mark in OVC play. Last weekend, the Redhawks claimed a 2-0 win over Austin Peay and a 3-0 win over Tennessee Tech to open their homestand. Freshman forward Ashley Runion (St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt South) currently leads Southeast with eight goals and 19 points in addition to winning back-to-back OVC Offensive Player of the Week accolades. Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) has notched a team-best 43 saves with a 0.79 goals against average and four shutouts.

Eastern Illinois enters the weekend sporting a 6-5-1 record with a 3-1 conference mark. The Panthers matched the Redhawks' scores versus Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay last weekend, winning by identical 3-0 and 2-0 margins. The Panthers are led offensively by senior forward Michelle Steinhaus' five goals, while sophomores Rachel Hamilton and Alexis Miller have tallied a team-best four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Williams' 36 saves ranks first on the team.

The Panthers currently hold a 8-2-2 lifetime advantage against Southeast, including a 5-0-1 mark in the last six meetings. Last season, EIU posted a 2-1 win over the Redhawks in Charleston and both teams played to a scoreless draw at Houck in 2005.
