Soccer Looking For Win After Tough Weekend

Oct. 15, 2003

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast soccer is looking to rebound off a tough weekend which saw them their first OVC loss since 2000. Last weekend the squad fell to Samford in a very close, competitive match-up 1-0 on Friday. Then on Sunday, the squad played 110 scoreless minutes as they out shot Jacksonville State 14 to 7, but couldn't find the goal as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Southeast faces Tennessee-Martin this Friday, October 17 at 4:00 p.m in Martin, Tenn. From there they will travel to Murray, Ky. to face the Murray State Racers at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19.

Scouting Tennessee-Martin...The Syhawks (6-5-3, 1-1-1 OVC) are coming off a 1-0 loss to Lipscomb University. The squad out shot their opponent 16-8, but much like Southeast, is struggling with finding the net. In previous action, the Skyhawks recorded their first OVC victory over Murray State 4-2 last Sunday. The squad's win moved them to 6th place in current OVC standings. In other conference action, the squad shares several similarities with the Othakians. Just like Southeast, the Skyhawks fell to Samford 1-0 and tied Jacksonville State 0-0 in double-overtime. Martin could come as a tough competitor for Southeast as the teams look to be pretty evenly matched. Sophomore Katie Jackson is currently dominating the team offensively as she leads the team with 37 shots, 11 goals, and 24 points.

Scouting Murray State...The Racers (3-8-3, 0-3-0 OVC) are currently struggling with a 7-game losing streak. They are coming off a 4-2 loss to Tennessee-Martin as they go into competition with Eastern Illinois this Friday, before facing Southeast on Sunday. The team has also suffered conference loses to Samford, 4-3, and Jacksonville State, 2-0. In non-conference competition, the Racers faced several common opponents with Southeast. Both teams played Southwest Missouri State to a 2-1 win and both defeated IUPUI as Murray posted a 2-0 victory and Southeast a 4-1 victory. Both teams also faced Evansville, as Southeast shut them out 1-0 and Murray fell 3-0. Although the Racers are yet to win a conference game, the Racers will place some tough competition on Southeast this weekend.

Scouting Southeast...The Otahkians (7-3-4) look to break out of their 2-game scoring slump going into this weekend's competition. The squad controlled the field and dominated the offensive attack against both Samford and Jacksonville State, but couldn't find the net. The Otahkians have posted a 2-1-1 record in OVC play thus far, as they are currently ranked 3rd in the OVC behind Eastern Illinois and Samford. The team is currently being led in shots by junior midfielder Marla Gianino. The scoring is spread across the board with 4 players leading the way with 3 goals a piece.

What's up next...After the squad's 2-game road-trip, the team will return to Houck Stadium to host their final two games of the regular season. The Otahkians will pair-off with Eastern Illinois on Friday, October 24 and with Tennessee Tech on Halloween night, October 31. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. for both contests.
