Southeast vs. Tennessee-Martin (4-11, 1-2)
October 24, 2001, 3:00 p.m.
Skyhawk Field (500), Martin, Tenn.
All-Time Series: Southeast leads 2-0.

About Southeast: The Otahkians soccer team will take to the road for its last away OVC contest this week as they close in on their first OVC regular season championship. Last week, Southeast got two more quality games out of its defense, but for the first time this season had a huge offensive explosion, scoring 12 goals and recording 32 total points. The output put them in the Top 10 in the country in scoring (they rank seventh with 2.92 points/game) for the first time all season.

With a win on Wednesday and a Murray State loss to Tennessee Tech on Friday, Southeast will clinch its first ever OVC regular season crown. Southeast currently sits atop the conference standings with a 3-0 record with only the UTM and Murray State games remaining. Winning the league crown will allow Southeast to host the OVC Tournament at Houck Stadium on Nov. 9-11. This will be extremely important because for the first time this year, the OVC Tournament champion will be awarded an automatic berth into this years NCAA Tournament, which expanded to 64 teams for 2001.

Southeast has recorded three straight games of shutouts since losing its lone game of the year two weeks ago. For the year, Southeast has recorded 10 shutouts in 13 total games, which is second in the country, trailing only the University of Denver.

In the two games last week, Southeast got three goals and two assists from freshman MF Marla Gianino, three goals from freshman F Erin Slattery, two goals from Diana Poovey, two goals from senior F Nichole Thiele and a goal apiece from freshmanMF Katie Huelsing and sophomore F Erika Todd.

The Otahks will look to continue the scoring trend against UT-Martin, a team that defeated Morehead State 4-1 earlier this season to capture their first OVC victory since 1998.
