Soccer Looks for Opportunity to Clinch Home Play-In Game

Oct. 29, 2003

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast found itself in the middle of the OVC tournament war last weekend as they lost a heartbreaker to Eastern Illinois 3-0. Currently, Southeast (3-3-1 OVC) is in fifth place in the OVC just one point behind Tennessee-Martin (3-2-2). Teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a tie, giving Tennessee-Martin 11 and Southeast 10, while Tennessee-Tech is close behind with 9.

Southeast is guaranteed a play-in game for the tournament, but they will be looking for home-field advantage this weekend as they play Tennessee-Tech this Friday, October 31, for their final regular season game. To move into fourth place and receive home field advantage for a play-in game, Southeast will have to beat Tennessee-Tech and Tennessee-Martin will have to lose or tie to Murray State.

Scouting Tennessee-Tech... The Golden Eagles (9-9-0, 3-4-0) are coming off a 2-1 loss to Tennessee-Martin on Sunday. The first half was controlled by defense as both teams were held scoreless, but in the 52nd minute Tech's Barbara Tomaszek but them up 1-0. That was the only goal they would see, as UT-Martin came from behind to score two goals in the last six minutes of the game, the game winning goal coming with only 26 seconds left on the clock. In earlier action, Tech smeared Murray State on Friday, 5-1. Sophomore midfielder Jill Burns had a three-goal performance, while junior forward Barbara Tomaszek recorded 4 assists. The Otahkians will need to shut down these two offensive threats for the Golden Eagles.

Scouting Southeast... Southeast (8-5-4, 3-3-1 OVC) is looking to close out the regular season with a win. The squad has had a difficult time scoring as of late, due to the tremendous unfortunate amount of injuries sustained by their offensive threats. Southeast has its longest rest period of the season this week, as the will reenergize before facing Tech this Friday. Leading the offensive attack for the squad is sophomore Ashley DeRoy with nine points on the season. Deroy has recorded three goals and three assists, and is second in shots on goal with 16. Junior forward Diana Poovey is leading the attack on goal with 18 shots on goal, scoring three this season.

Friday's game should prove to be a very tense, competitive game, as Southeast fights hard for a win and a chance to host their play-in game.
