Southeast Soccer Sweeps All-OVC Honors

Nov. 8, 2007

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State soccer earned a sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference postseason awards tonight at the conference's annual banquet held at the Show Me Center. The awards and postseason honors were voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches and sports information directors.

Sophomore forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty) was named Offensive Player of the Year and senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) captured Defensive Player of the Year accolades while freshman forward Ashley Runion (St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt South) garnered Freshman of the Year honors. Ninth-year head coach Heather Nelson earned Brine OVC Coach of the Year recognition for the third time after guiding the Redhawks to their first conference regular-season title since 2002.

Alexander ranked among the conference leaders with eight goals, six assists and 22 points on the year and produced her second collegiate hat trick at Murray State on Oct. 19. Pickering leads the OVC with a 0.64 goals-against average and seven shutouts this season in addition to being the conference's all-time shutout leader with 27 career blankings. Runion ranks first in the conference with 1.53 points per game and is second with 0.60 goals per contest while producing a team-best nine goals and 23 points in her first collegiate season.

Alexander and Pickering were joined on the All-OVC First Team by senior midfielder Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word), who claimed all-conference second team accolades in 2006. Runion was joined by fellow classmate Vanessa Hart (Dubbo, NSW Australia/Dubbo SC) on the All-OVC Second Team and OVC All-Newcomer teams.

The top-seeded Redhawks will battle fourth-seeded UT Martin in the semifinals of the 2007 OVC Championship tomorrow evening with a start time of 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the internet on OVCSports.tv.
