Redhawks fall 10-2 in Final Contest of Mardi Gras Classic

Feb. 15, 2009

Box Score

MONROE, LA. (Sunday, February 15, 2009) – The Redhawks softball team dropped their final contest of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic against Centenary College 10-2 on Sunday morning. The loss gave the Redhawks a 2-2 record at the tournament and dropped their record to 4-2 on the year, their best start of a season in 13 years.

The Redhawks quickly fell behind the Ladies (6-2) 10-0 after the pitching staff gave up five runs in both the first and second innings. Where the Redhawks pitching faltered the Ladies starting pitcher Jessica Bock flourished. Avenging her first loss of the season as the losing pitcher in the Redhawks extra inning 5-4 victory last night, she allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.

The Redhawks runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth Jennifer Vasquez reached base on a one-out walk. Freshman Renee Kertz doubled moving Vasquez to third. Carmen Fowler then walked to load the bases for Shelby Stein. Vasquez would score on Stein’s fielder’s choice for the Redhawks first run of the game.

In the fifth inning the Redhawks added their final run of the game. Nicole Troncoso led off with a single through the left side. Pinch hitter Ashlee Hebel then hit a two-out double to plate Troncoso. Bock would retire Vasquez for the final out with two runners in scoring position.

Whitney Dupuis (1-2) tried battling through the flu but gave up five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.

Kertz went 2-2 from the plate to lead the Redhawks offense.

The Ladies had three players with multiple hits led by Lindsey Smith who went 2-2 with three RBIs highlighted by a two-run homerun. Haley Bassett went 2-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

The Redhawks will take the week off before travelling south down I-55 to Memphis, Tennessee to participate in the Blues City Classic on February 28.
