Southeast Sweeps First Game of Classic Tournament
March 7, 2003 CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri Otahkian Softball team swamped the Siena Saints today 8-1. This was game one for the Southeast Missouri State Softball Classic three-day tournament. Southeast scored in the first by Junior Amy Murphy and again in the second by junior Marie Coode. The third inning the Otahkians tacked on another three runs. Murphy started the inning out with a double. Freshman Kate Groden sacrificed with a fly out to center field and Murphy advanced to third. Senior Brooke Nett singled to shortstop bringing in Murphy for Southeast's third run. Junior Alana Bagby-Leonard hit a homerun and with her came Nett. Siena put a run up on the board in the fourth inning after a couple of Southeast errors. Grant grounded out but was followed by a single up the middle by Salamino. Walker reached base by an error from shortstop and advanced to second on the throw. Salamino scored after another error by right field. Southeast scored three more times with one in the fourth by Murphy, and two in the fifth by Bagby-Leonard and Junior Suzi Lair. Bagby-Leonard, a junior college transfer, had a great game today. Bagby-Leonard was 4-4 at bat including one homerun as well as bringing in three runs for the team. Murphy was 3-3 at bat while Senior Kemi Rampi brought in three runners throughout the game. Kelly Birk was the winning pitcher bringing her pitching record to 2-1. Game two of the Southeast Missouri Softball Classic will be tomorrow, March 8, with games beginning at 10 a.m. including Drake, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee, Siena, and Southwest. |
