Illinois St. Tops the Otahks at the Hilltopper Spring Classic

March 7, 2004

Box Score

Cape Girardeau - The Southeast Missouri State softball team squared off against a good Illinois State club in the first game of the Hilltopper Spring Classic hosted by Western Kentucky University. Illinois State edged out the win by the score of 9-7, bringing the Otahks overall record to 1-2.

Pitcher Amy Fahnestock threw very well in the loss, striking out six and only walking one. She allowed nine hits and four earned runs. Defense seemed to be the downfall as Southeast committed three errors in the bout and allowed five unearned runs.

The Otahkian bats showed up in full tilt as they scored seven runs on eight hits in the contest. Third basemen Jamie Birk had a big game going two for three with four RBI's and a run scored. Second basemen Suzi Lair and first basemen Alana Bagby-Leonard each had productive days going two-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored. Bagby-Leonard also had a home run in the affair.

The Otahkian softball team will next face Belmont in the consolation game of the tournament.
