Redhawks Sweep Twinbill vs. Lady Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Tuesday, March 17, 2009) – After having six games in three days called due to weather in North Carolina, the Redhawks softball team finally took the field on Tuesday evening and took both games of a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T. The Redhawks rallied in the final innings to take game one 8-7 and then dispatched the Lady Aggies 6-0 behind freshman Stefanie Barnes pitching gem. After jumping ahead 4-0 after the first inning, the Redhawks (9-5) eventually fell behind the Lady Aggies 7-6 thanks in part to a three-run fifth inning by the home team. The Redhawks tied the game up at 7-7 with a run in the sixth and would score the winning run in the top of the seventh as freshman Renee Kertz scored from third on a pass ball by the Lady Aggies. Freshman ace Giana Zimmerman got her team-high fifth win of the season in relief as she pitched 3.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out six. The Redhawks had three players record multiple hits led by junior Alex Ramirez who went 2-3 with a run scored. Freshman Shelby Stein went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Nicole Troncoso also went 2-4 with a run driven in. Kertz went 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI in the victory. In game two Barnes recorded her second-straight shutout win in as many starts. She has pitched 16.1 innings of shutout ball in her last three appearances. In her second career start she pitched all seven innings allowing just five hits, walking three and striking out a career-best seven Lady Aggies. Four Redhawks recorded multiple hits with the hot hitting Troncoso leading the way with her first career three-hit game going 3-4 with a run scored. She extended her current hitting streak to four games. Stein collected her third multiple hit game of the season going 2-4 from the lead-off spot. Kertz went 2-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior Lauren Bradley made her first appearance of the season a memorable one as she went 2-4 with two RBIs including a RBI double. The Redhawks conclude their North Carolina road trip tomorrow as they head to nearby Elon to face Elon University for a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 3:00 p.m. After that the Redhawks will make their long trek back home with a stop in Morehead, Kentucky for their Ohio Valley Conference opening series this weekend. |
