CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State softball ended this weekend's Ohio Valley Conference home series with a doubleheader split with visiting Eastern Kentucky today at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Colonels (15-17, 8-3) posted a 12-3 win in the second game that was delayed yesterday by rain and the Redhawks (10-17, 3-5) captured a 3-2 win in the final game.
In the second game, EKU posted a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI singles from senior Kelsey Anderson and junior Katie Rolf. Southeast got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to a solo home run from freshman second baseman Jennifer Vasquez (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado) to pull within 2-1.
The Colonels tallied two more runs in the top of the second to claim a 4-1 advantage. Freshman Sheyenne Hussey drew an RBI walk to bring home senior Keri Macinsky and Anderson posted an RBI fielder's choice that scored junior Chanze Patterson from third. Junior right fielder Katie Otterness (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) tallied an RBI single in the bottom of the second to score freshman catcher Alex Ramirez (Corona, Calif./El Modena) to slice the Redhawks' deficit at 4-2.
The visitors added three runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Patterson to left field, and brought home another run in the fourth inning which hiked the leading margin to 8-2. EKU posted four runs in the top of the fifth behind a two-run homer from Anderson and a solo blast from senior Amy Meyrhofer to increase its lead at 12-2. Junior shortstop Megan McDonald (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central) concluded the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left field.
Anderson led the Colonels offensively by going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Mayrhofer posted a perfect 3-for-3 day and drove in two runs. Sophomore Kalyn Fox (5-4) gained the win on the mound after allowing one run on four hits and posted two strikeouts in four relief innings.
McDonald (2-for-3, RBI) and Ramirez (2-for-2, run) combined for four of Southeast's eight hits in the contest. Freshman pitcher Stacia Dopudja (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) saw her record slip to 1-4 on the year after giving up four runs on five hits in one and two-thirds innings of work.
Rolf opened the final game with Rolf's solo homer to left center in the second inning off junior pitcher Elaine Fisher (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell North) which gave EKU a 1-0 lead. The Colonels increased their leading margin to 2-0 in the top of the third after Anderson doubled to right field which scored Mayrhofer from second base.
Southeast evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third with a two-run rally, highlighted by an RBI double from sophomore catcher Amber Peterson (Camarillo, Calif./Oaks Christian). The score stayed the same until the sixth inning when senior center field Stephanie Mata (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling HS) lined an RBI double to center field that scored Otterness from first base as the Redhawks took a 3-2 lead and Fisher ended any EKU comeback chances in the seventh.
Mata led Southeast with a 2-for-2 offensive effort with an RBI, while Fisher (7-12) captured the complete-game victory with five strikeouts and walked two.
Rolf went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Colonels. Anderson (7-9) took the loss despite allowing a run on three hits in three and one-third innings of relief.
