Southeast Softball Gives Austin Peay First OVC Loss of Season
April 5, 2003 CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri State softball team (7-18, 3-1) split a doubleheader today with the Austin Peay Lady Govs (14-17-1, 4-1). The Otahkians won the first game 5-0 and lost the second 2-1. The third and final game of the series will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Otahkians had a great first game winning 5-0. The Otahks had seven hits and zero errors for the game. The first runs came in the top of the third when junior Kelly Birk reached on an error by centerfield. Junior powerhouse Alana Bagby-Leonard smacked her third homerun of the season with two RBI. In the fourth, junior Amy Murphy walked followed with a single by freshman Kate Groden. Senior Brooke Nett stepped up with a single bringing in Murphy and sophomore Kelly Birk also hit a single bringing Groden home. Southeast scored the final run in the sixth after Nett hit her second single and second RBI. Junior Jessica Hunter was the winning pitcher advancing her record to 3-4. Bagby-Leonard and Nett both left the first game with two hits and two RBI. Southeast lost the second game with only one run, six hits, and one error. The Otahkians scored their single run in the top of the sixth inning. The inning started strong for the Otahks with two singles in a row by Groden and Nett. Groden eventually was out at home but Nett scored on a sacrifice by senior Katie Cerneka. Senior Holly Ricketts received the pitching win improving her record to 5-4. The Otahkians will complete the third and final game, of the three-game series, against Austin Peay at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The Otahkians will then be on the road this week as they challenge Eastern Illinois in a doubleheader on April 9. The games will begin at 2 p.m. in Charleston, Ill. |
