Southeast Softball Splits with Eastern Illinois

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State softball team (8-19, 4-3) split a doubleheader today with the Eastern Illinois Panthers (6-23, 1-5). The Panthers won the first game 1-0 but the Otahkians won the third 7-6.

The Panthers won their first OVC game today winning the first game 1-0. The single score came in the first inning by Kristin Darnell after a single by Cassandra North drove her home. Kristen Becker was the winning pitcher improving her record to 5-11. Otahkian junior, Jessica Hunter, took the loss with a season record now of 3-5. The Otahkians were able to get five hits, 18 putouts, and 16 assists but still lost to the Panthers.

The Otahkians pulled it together to edge Eastern Illinois out of the second game taking the victory 7-6. The Panthers led the first inning with a single score. The second inning the Otahkians answered back with a run of their own by junior Stacey DeClue whom was pinch running for sophomore Kelly Birk. Southeast managed to tally up three more runs in the third and three in the fourth. The Panthers brought in two more runs in the fifth but it was not enough to overtake Southeast.

Birk ended the second game with two hits (both triples), one run, four RBI, and the pitching win improving her record to 5-6. Junior Amy Murphy and freshman Kate Groden both had one hit and two runs contributed to the game. Senior Kemi Rampi smacked two hits with one RBI.

The Otahkians will be in Cookeville, Tenn. this weekend as they face Tennessee Tech in a three-game series. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday with a single game on Sunday. Games will begin at 1:30 p.m. on both days.
