Southeast Softball Drops Two at Tennessee Tech

Cookeville, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri State Softball team dropped a pair of games to Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon in Cookeville, Tenn. Southeast dropped the first 3-1 before being shutout in the second 7-0. With the losses, Southeast falls to 5-4 in the OVC (10-24 overall). The Otahkians will get a chance to get back on the winning track against TTU tomorrow at 1 p.m.
In game one, Southeast combined for seven hits, but could only push one run across the plate. Otahkian freshman center fielder Lindsay Pickering drove home the only run for Southeast when she brought home senior Jamie Birk with an RBI-single. Birk had reached base on a single earlier in the inning, giving her a 1-for-3 performance on the day. Pickering was the only Otahk with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Amy Fahnestock, who pitched a no-hitter on Wednesday against Austin Peay, started game one for Southeast, but only went an inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on three hits. She was lifted for senior Jessica Hunter, who gave up one run on three hits in an inning and one-third of work. Junior Kelly Birk went the final three innings, while giving up just two hits and allowing no runs. The Southeast pitching staff allowed a single run in each of the first three innings, before shutting down the TTU offense for the rest of the game. Fahnestock, however, took the loss, to drop her record to 4-7 on the season. In game two, the Tennessee Tech pitcher Tia Brenning held the Southeast offense to no runs on just two hits while striking out seven and walking just one Otahkian batter in the TTU 7-0 win. Jamie and Kelly Birk were the only Otahks to reach base against Brenning, as Jamie Birk went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk, while Kelly Birk went 1-for-3 with a double. While Brenning (7-8) earned the victory, Southeast's Kelly Birk (4-8) took the loss. Birk allowed three runs in two innings of work, while Hunter went two and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs. Melissa Van Velkinburgh also went one-third of an inning, giving up a run on two hits. Tennessee Tech combined for 14 hits in the game off Southeast pitching. The Otahkians play tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Tennessee Tech. |
