Southeast Softball Wins Two against Morehead State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (April 18, 2003) - The Southeast Missouri State softball team (11-22, 7-5) picked up two OVC wins against Morehead State (6-26, 3-7) today. The final game in the three-game series will be tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the Southeast Softball Complex.

The Otahkians started off the first game with three runs in the first inning. Errors led to senior Alicia Loucks and freshman Kate Groden getting on base. Senior Brooke Nett tripled bringing in Loucks and Groden. Then, sophomore Kelly Birk singled bringing in Nett.

Southeast was able to get three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles couldn't put any runs on the board until the fifth inning when senior Toni Orr hit a grand slam bringing the score 6-4. Southeast was able to get one more run in the sixth ending the game 7-4.

The Otahkians held their own in the second game as well, winning 6-3. Southeast got their first run in the second inning when junior Alana Bagby-Leonard hit a home run. The Otahkians tacked on four more runs in the third bringing the lead 5-0. The Eagles brought in their three runs in the top of the fifth but it wasn't enough to overtake Southeast who added their final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Today Kelly Birk was 4-4 at bat with three RBI. Birk also earned the win in the second game improving her pitching record to 6-7. Sophomore Rachel Van Fleet took her first victory in the first game today. Junior Jessica Hunter was credited with saves for both games.

The final game in the three-game series will be tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Otahkians will remain home next week as they host Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, April 23. The doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Southeast Softball Complex.
