Southeast @ Winthrop Tournament
March 15-17, 2001
Rock Hill, S.C. - Winthrop Softball Complex

About Southeast: Coming off their first victory of the season, Southeast Missouri hopes to take that confidence into the Winthrop University Tournament this weekend. The Otahkians will play four games in pool play starting Friday, before advancing to a bracket playoff on Sunday afternoon.

Southeast broke out of its offensive slump by scoring five runs in the third inning and six for the game versus Indiana State on Monday. With Southeast leading game two 4-2 in the first inning, the second part of the doubleheader was unfortunately cancelled by rain. Junior Katie Cerneka, who leads both the team and the OVC with a .500 batting average, was 2-4 on the game. Kemi Rampi also came through big with her first hit of the season, an two-RBI double, and Jamie Birk had three RBI's on the day, including her first hit in a Southeast uniform. Junior 2B Brooke Nett also hit well, going 3-3 at the plate.

On the mound, freshman Rachel Van Fleet recorded the first complete game by a Southeast pitcher so far this season, by going seven innings to record her first victory of the young season.

In pool play at Winthrop, Southeast will battle Pittsburgh (5-14 record), and Jacksonville State (11-4) on Friday and Birmingham Southern (4-22) and Gardner-Webb (12-17) on Saturday. Each of those teams has played 15 or more games as compared to only seven by Southeast so far this season. No matter how many wins or losses Southeast has in those games, they'll advance to the bracket playoffs on Sunday.

Southeast has only played one of those schools before, that being Pittsburgh in a game the Otahkians lost.

The tournament is at the same time Spring Break starts at Southeast. Following this weekend's play, the Otahkians travel to the College of Charleston before flying back to St. Louis where they'll battle the SLU Billikens before heading back to Cape Girardeau to start OVC play against preseason number two Eastern Kentucky.
