Southeast Missouri (12-24, 9-11 OVC)
vs. Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (23-28, 11-7 OVC)
April 27, 2002, 1:00 p.m. (DH)
Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast Softball Complex (600)
All-Time Series: Southeast leads 46-22.

About Southeast: The Southeast Missouri Softball team will be looking to continue its conference momentum as it heads into next weekend's OVC Tournament. The Otahkians have won four of their last six conference games and are almost a lock to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley.

Southeast will finish fourth with either a win over UT-Martin or as long as Austin Peay does not sweep a three-game series from Eastern Illinois this weekend. If Southeast would lose and APSU sweeps EIU, then the Otahks would finish fifth and open with Austin Peay in the first round. If Southeast wins or APSU does not sweep, Southeast will finish fourth and play the #5 seed who could be either APSU, EIU or Morehead State, depending on the outcomes of this weekend's games.

The Otahkians got the first game of a doubleheader in against river-rival Southern Illinois before storms moved into the area on Wednesday. Two unearned runs in the second inning valuted the Salukis to their fourth consecutive victory over the Otahks, 3-1.

Earlier this season, Southeast and the Skyhawks split a doubleheader in Martin. In game one, Southeast got a two-run homerun from Courtney Eklund as part of a three-run fourth inning to vault them to a 3-2 victory thanks to a strong pitching performance from Kelly Birk. The Otahkians led game two 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, but UTM scored twice in the inning and held on to clip the Otahkians 2-1.

The one run loss to UTM marked the seventh one-run loss Southeast had suffered in conference play this season. If a couple of runs went in favor of Southeast, the Otahkians could have a 16-4 record in conference play and be sitting in first place instead of having a 9-11 record and being in fourth place.

The seven Southeast seniors, Jennifer Cobin, Shelley Conroy, Courtney Eklund, Reagan Hamlin, Kristen King, Emmy Kisaka and Dawn Piantino will be playing in their last game at the Southeast Softball Complex. They will be honored in a ceremony between games. In their four-year careers at SEMO, Eklund, Kisaka and Piantino have won 99 games.

Game one on Saturday will act as a OVC conference game, the team's final conference game of the year, while game two will be a non-conference contest.

About the Opposition: UT-Martin (23-28, 11-7)

The Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin enter the final weekend of the regular season on a five-game losing streak. UTM was suppose to battle Austin Peay on Wednesday, but storms cancelled the game that will not be made up.

In their last conference series, UTM dropped a three-game series in Cookeville to second place Tennessee Tech. Prior to that series, the Skyhawks split a doubleheader with Southeast in Martin.

Martin's top player junior transfer Kendra Kosco. Kosco is dominant on the mound, recording a 14-7 record with a 1.71 ERA. Most impressive, however, is her 163 strikeouts in only 139 innings pitched. That works out to 1.17 strikeouts per inning she pitches. She has 63 more strikeouts than the entire Southeast team combined. Kosco was the winning pitcher in game two against Southeast, the last time the teams met.

Offensively, junior 1B Meredith Ramsey is the catalyst for the Skyhawks. She leads the team in hits, runs, doubles, homeruns and RBI's while batting right at .300. UTM also likes to make the most of their speed on the basepaths and have stolen 51 bases in 77 attempts this year. Southeast has only attempted 24 steals on the season.

Southeast Notes

Senior Day is Approaching: Saturday's doubleheader with UT-Martin will mark the last home game for seven Southeast seniors. Jennifer Cobin, Shelley Conroy, Courtney Eklund, Reagan Hamlin, Kristen King, Emmy Kisaka and Dawn Piantino will all be honored in a ceremony between to the two games of the doubleheader. The ceremony will be approximately 3:00 p.m. The three Otahkians that have been with the program for four-years (Eklund, Kisaka and Piantino) have won 99 games in their careers and will be looking for their 100th victory on Saturday. The are 99-90 in their four years at Southeast.

Injury Update: Jamie Birk and Brooke Nett were both banged up in the Morehead State game. Birk had to have stitches in the side of her head following a collosion at home plate. She was able to return to the lineup against SIU on Wednesday. Nett injured her knee in a collosion at first base and is still listed as day-to-day and did not play against SIU. Pinch runner Michelle Lunsford suffered a mild concussion last weekend against Tennessee Tech and is also day-to-day but will definitely be back for Saturday's game against UT-Martin. Catcher Alicia Loucks was also hurt in the TTU game in a collosion at home plate. She is still out indefinitely but a weekend return has been targeted by the Southeast training staff. OF Katie Cerneka suffered a cut in her leg against SIU on Wednesday and left the game. She will not play this weekend but is expected back for the OVC Tournament.

One Runs Games: Southeast could easily be 16-4 in OVC games this year, instead of their current 9-11. The Otahkians have dropped seven one-run conference games this year. In total, Southeast has lost nine total one-run games this season, while winning only two, one-run games.

Hitting Streaks: SS Dawn Piantino had her nine-game hitting streak, the longest by an Otahkian this season, snapped Wednesday against SIU. The longest streak now is a six-game streak by Kelly Birk. Reagan Hamlin and Brooke Nett both have current four-game streaks.

Too Many Strikeouts: Offensively this season, Southeast has struck out 189 times at-bat. That is an amazing 89 more times than their opponents have struck out this season.

Twice is Nice: Versus Tennessee Tech in game one two Saturdays ago, Southeast turned an amazing three double plays, all to end innings and Golden Eagle scoring threats. The most impressive was a fly out to rightfield that Courtney Eklund grabbed an nailed the runner at home plate trying to score. On the season, Southeast has recorded 20 double plays (in 36 games), after turning only 10 all of last year (in 50 games). The 20 double plays leads the OVC, not only by percentage (Southeast averages .55 per game) but also overall although the Otahks have only played in 36 games. Tennessee Tech is second in the league with 19 double-plays in 52 total games.

Avoid the Fifth: Southeast has been outscored 28-10 in the fifth inning this season. The Otahkians only hold a scoring advantage over their opponents in one inning, the first (23-22).

A Cal Ripken of Sorts: Only one Otahkian 1B Reagan Hamlin has started every game this season at the same position. Last season, Hamlin was the only team member to start in all 50 games. She did so at 1B, 3B or at pitcher. She has now started 86 consecutive games.

Pinch Hitting Success: When needing a lift off the bench, Southeast has had success with pinch hitters. In total, those hitters are a combined 15-50 (.300) off the bench. Christine Knobbe leads the way with four hits as a pinch hitter, including two triples. The total of two triples leads the team this season.

Not So Friendly Confines: Southeast currently has a 5-13 record at home, with two games remaining to be played. The Otahkians have never had a losing record at the Southeast Softball Complex in its three prior seasons. They have also never had a losing record when they played their games in the center of campus at their other field.
