Southeast Missouri (13-25) @ OVC Tournament About Southeast: The 'second season' starts on Friday, when Southeast can put a regular season record they would rather forget and focus on winning over the next three days. And although the Otahkians had a 9-12 conference record this season, seven of those 12 losses were by only one run. If the Otahks could have won those seven games, they would have finished 16-5 and won the conference. Southeast will open the tournament against Austin Peay on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time at Eastern Kentucky. Southeast took two of three games from Austin Peay in the regular season this year and have won 32 of the last 34 in the overall series. The Otahkians can also look back at last year for a little motivation, as APSU upset Southeast 1-0 in the regular season finale to keep the Otahks from a share of the 2001 OVC Regular Season Title. If Southeast is victorious against the Lady Govs, they will battle host and regular season champion Eastern Kentucky. EKU swept the season series from Southeast, although the first two games were both one-run contests. A loss in the opening round game would push Southeast into the consolation bracket against an unknown opponent. Southeast has been very successful in the nine previous OVC Tournaments, winning five of them including four in a row at one stretch. Southeast has more victories (25) in the event than any other OVC team and their five titles and more than every other OVC team combined. Southeast last won a title in 1999, defeating Eastern Illinois 7-1 in the championship game held in Martin, Tenn. Statistically, Southeast will rely on freshman pitcher Kelly Birk at the tournament. Birk has a 6-5 record and 2.08 E.R.A. in conference action this season. Senior Kristen King threw a complete-game in her last outing, and the deeper into games she can go this weekend will also be a key. Offensively, senior catcher Jennifer Cobin has a great shot at an All-OVC selection (which will be announced Friday) as she is leading the team in batting in 21 conference games, hitting .339 with seven RBI's. Results will be available here at GoSoutheast.com, at EKU's Athletic Website or the OVC's Website. Southeast OVC Tournament History

Southeast Notes MVP: Senior shortstop Dawn Piantino was named 'Team MVP' at the Southeast All-Sports Banquet on Wednesday night. Piantino leads the team in hits, runs, doubles, homeruns, walks and slugging. Seniors Reach 100: Saturday's doubleheader against Tennessee-Martin was the last games for the seven Southeast seniors (Jennifer Cobin, Shelley Conroy, Courtney Eklund, Reagan Hamlin, Kristen King, Emmy Kisaka and Dawn Piantino). For Eklund, Kisaka and Piantino, the four Otahkians who have been with the program for four years, the win in game two marked their 100th victory in four seasons. Injury Update: Injury after injury over the past few weeks have left Southeast without a full roster. But as the OVC Tournament approaches, Southeast should be at full strength. Against UT-Martin, only Brooke Nett and Katie Cerneka sat out, but both are expected back for Friday's game. A Full Slate: Southeast and Morehead State (who did not qualify for the tournament) were the only two OVC teams to play all 21 conference games this season. Other teams had games rained out and did not complete the full schedule. League champion EKU only played 18 total conference games and had one less victory (16) than second place Tennessee Tech (17) had, but had an overall better winning percentage. That's the same thing that placed Southeast fifth behind Austin Peay, despite having one more win than the Lady Govs and taking 2 of 3 in the season series. One Runs Games: Southeast could easily have finished 16-5 in OVC games this year, instead of 9-12. The Otahkians dropped seven one-run conference games this year. In total, Southeast has lost nine total one-run games this season, while winning only two, one-run games. Hitting Streaks: SS Dawn Piantino had her nine-game hitting streak, the longest by an Otahkian this season, snapped last Wednesday against SIU. The longest streak now is a six-game streak by Reagan Hamlin. Too Many Strikeouts: Offensively this season, Southeast has struck out 202 times at-bat. That is an amazing 95 more times than their opponents have struck out this season. Twice is Nice: Versus Tennessee Tech in game one two Saturdays ago, Southeast turned an amazing three double plays, all to end innings and Golden Eagle scoring threats. The most impressive was a fly out to rightfield that Courtney Eklund grabbed an nailed the runner at home plate trying to score. On the season, Southeast has recorded 22 double plays (in 368games), after turning only 10 all of last year (in 50 games). The 22 double plays leads the OVC, not only by percentage (Southeast averages .55 per game) but also overall although the Otahks have only played in 36 games. Avoid the Fifth: Southeast has been outscored 28-12 in the fifth inning this season. The Otahkians only hold a scoring advantage over their opponents in one inning, the first (23-22). A Cal Ripken of Sorts: Only one Otahkian 1B Reagan Hamlin has started every game this season at the same position. Last season, Hamlin was the only team member to start in all 50 games. She did so at 1B, 3B or at pitcher. She has now started 88 consecutive games. Other Dubious Streaks: Southeast Coach Lana Richmond has never had a losing record in her 19 prior seasons at Southeast. A 25-25 record from 2001 is the worst record she has posted in her career. In the 22 years of softball at Southeast, the Otahkians have only had one losing season, a 21-28 mark in 1982. One Other Unkind Streak: Southeast finished below .500 for the first time ever in OVC play in 11 seasons. In the Field: As a team, Southeast has a .961 team fielding percentage up from the .951 percentage the team had last season. Two Otahkians, 1B Amy Thompson and P Rachel Van Fleet, all have perfect 1.000 fielding percentages. Southeast currently rank second in the OVC in fielding behind Tennessee Tech. Taking One For the Team: Junior infielder Brooke Nett always takes one for the team. Last season she hit 12 times by a pitch and has been hit three in 2002. That brings her three-year total to 24, which ranks as the all-time Southeast record. Her 12 HBP's last season is the Southeast single season record.
