Cobin Leads All-OVC Selections For Southeast Softball Team Senior catcher is first-team selection, two make second team, a third honorable mention.
May 3, 2002 RICHMOND, Ky. - Southeast Missouri State senior catcher Jennifer Cobin was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team on Friday night at the league awards banquet held in conjunction with the OVC Softball Tournament. Cobin was the only first-team selection for Southeast, as senior outfielder Courtney Eklund and junior second baseman Brooke Nett were second-team selections and senior first baseman Reagan Hamlin was an honorable mention choice. Cobin led the team in batting in conference games this season, batting 19-56 (.339) with seven RBI's in 19 games. Overall on the season, Cobin is second on the team with a .302 average. The senior has been a force behind the plate, committing only one error in 90 chances this season. Cobin also threw out 62.2% (14 in total) base runners that tried to steal against her. The award marks the third consecutive season that the All-OVC first-team catcher has been a Southeast player. Renee Enos, now an assistant coach with the Otahkians, was the first-team catcher in 2000 and 2001. Eklund and Nett, both second team selections in 2001, reclaimed that honor in 2002. Eklund was third on the team in batting during conference play (.309), while knocking out five doubles and nine RBI's. Overall, Eklund is batting .277 on the season and is tied for the team-high with nine doubles. Her 25 career doubles ranks 10th all-time at Southeast. Nett hit .311 in OVC action this year and leads the team overall with a .307 average in 34 games. Nett ranks second on the team in runs (31) and doubles (6) and is 5-6 in stolen base attempts. Hamlin, the team-leader in RBI's with 16 (10 of which came in conference play) was the only honorable mention choice for Southeast. Hamlin is the only Otahkian to start and play in every game over the past two seasons, a streak that reached 88 games entering the OVC Tournament. Tennessee Tech power hitter LeeAnne Mongar was named the OVC Player of the Year after hitting .376 overall to go along with her 10 homeruns. Eastern Kentucky ace Jonelle Csora, who pitched a no-hitter against Southeast earlier in the day, grabbed OVC Pitcher of the Year honors after posting a 19-6 overall record and sparkling 1.20 E.R.A. Csora struck out an OVC-high 207 batters in 181 innings and allowed her opponents to hit only .183 on the season against her. Tennessee Tech's Lisa Lamb was the recipient of the Freshman of the Year award. Lamb posted a 1.50 E.R.A. and 11 wins on the season. Eastern Kentucky's Jane Worthington won her first OVC Coach of the Year award after leading EKU to its first OVC Regular Season Championship. In total, EKU placed five players on the first-team, two more on the second team and also had an honorable mention selection. After winning one game and losing one game on Friday, Southeast will continue OVC Tournament play on Saturday morning when they battle Tennessee-Martin at 10:00 a.m.
