Nett Receives Regional Academic Honor

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (May 8, 2003) - Southeast senior infielder, Brooke Nett has been named a Verizon Academic All-District member as well as a first team All-OVC Selection as announced today. Nett was a second team selection last year.

Nett has a .319 batting average (38-119) with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs, 18 runs and 23 RBI. She has earned the 2003 OVC Medal of Honor by achieving the highest GPA among all OVC softball athletes, a four-year SE Scholar Athlete and three-time OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. She was named to the All-OVC Second Team the past two seasons and named to the OVC All-Tournament team in 2002. She was just named the 2003 Howard's MVP for the softball season.

Joining Nett on the First Team are infielders Jenny Kelly of Austin Peay, Kristin Lovering of Eastern Illinois, LeeAnne Monger of Tennessee Tech, and Kristin Runyan of Tennessee-Martin. The outfielders were Jen Christiansen of Eastern Kentucky, Stephanie Dallman of Tennessee Tech and Toni Orr of Morehead State. Nicole Davis of UTM was the utility player, with Kasy Bennett of Tech being named the catcher and Lori Bayless of Tech and Jonello Csora of EKU the pitchers.

Dallman was named the Player of the Year, while Csora was named Pitcher of the Year. Lori McCoy of Austin Peay was named the league's Freshman of the Year, while Tory Acheson of Tech was named the Coach of the Year.

Nett is majoring in Administration Systems Management with a cumulative grade point average of 3.806. Nett has started in all 42 games this season and has only missed two starts in her entire career at Southeast. She has just set a new school record of 179 softball games started.

Pitcher/Designated Player, Kelly Birk was named to the league's second team as a Utility Player. She batted .302 on the season with 32 hits, five doubles, two triples, one homer and 19 RBI. As a pitcher she was 6-9 with a 4.76 ERA.

The Otahks will begin play today in the first round of the OVC Tournament where they will play the No. 5 seed Austin Peay Lady Govs at 2 p.m.
