Four Redhawks Capture All-OVC Softball Honors

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Four members of the Southeast Missouri State softball team have were named to All-Ohio Valley Conference postseason teams, the conference announced Wednesday night at its annual awards banquet in Cookeville, Tenn. The all-conference teams and postseason awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. Junior third baseman Michelle Summers (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) was named to the conference's First Team, while senior outfielder Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) and junior shortstop Megan McDonald (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central) claimed Second Team honors. Freshman infielder/pitcher Stacia Dopudja (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) was named to the OVC's All-Newcomer Team. Summers led the Redhawks offensively with a .333 batting average and set a new single-season school record for home runs with 14. In addition, she finished second on the team in hits (51) and doubles (seven) while posting a team-best .667 slugging percentage and 111 defensive assists. Summers batted .353 against OVC competition with nine homers, five doubles and drove in 22 runs. Pickering hit .308 with six homers, four doubles and 19 RBI on the year, while finishing second on the team in stolen bases with two. She led the Redhawks on the defensive end with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage and posted a .327 batting average in conference play. McDonald produced a .306 batting average, eight home runs, seven doubles and 25 RBI, while hitting .348 against conference opponents and finished second on the team in defensive assists with 108. Dopudja came on strong in her inaugural collegiate campaign by hitting .327, while posting team highs in hits (51), doubles (11), RBI (40) and defensive putouts (238). She ranked second on the team with 12 home runs, produced a .623 slugging percentage and tallied a .985 fielding percentage. Tennessee Tech's Beth Boden and Bonnie Bynum captured the OVC's Player and Pitcher of the Year awards, while Tennessee-Martin freshman Ashley Benbow was named the conference's Newcomer of the Year. Tennessee State head coach Joyce Maudie was selected as the OVC's Coach of the Year honoree. The Redhawks finished the season with a 20-29 record with an 11-16 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play. |
