Tennis Squad Extends Winning Streak to Six with 8-1 Victory Over Hope

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Southeast tennis ran their winning streak to six straight matches with an 8-1 victory over Hope College Friday morning. The win makes the Redhawks (9-5, 3-1 OVC) a perfect 3-0 on their spring break trip heading into Saturday's match versus Middlebury College from Middlebury, Vt.
Southeast continued their dominance in doubles by winning all three matches for the third consecutive day. Bryce Kristal (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) and Drew Kristal (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) won 8-2 on the No. 1 court over Samantha Still and Ashley Austin. The tandem is now 11-3 in 2007. Julia Masotti (Moji-Mirim, São Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Integral Aplicado) and Elise Nattier (Flora, Ill./Flora) defeated Christine Garcia and Lucy Himes by the same margin in No. 2 play for their fifth straight victory together. Seniors Luz Garcia (Bogota, Colombia/Troy) and Kimmy Anderson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) finished out doubles competition with an 8-3 victory against Marissa Kooyers and Beth Olson to even their season record at 5-5 as a duo. The Redhawks carried the momentum into singles play and came out on top in five of the six matches. Bryce Kristal defeated Still 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 play. She has won nine of her last 10 singles matches, including six in a row. Reigning Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Female Tennis Athlete of the Week, Drew Kristal, was perfect in defeating Austin, 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 2 singles court. The win marked her eighth straight singles victory. Garcia extended her winning streak to five straight by winning 6-1, 6-2 over Ashley Leary in No. 3 competition. In the No. 4 match, Masotti made quick work of Garcia, beating her in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Nattier won her ninth straight singles match in a super tiebreaker over Danielle Werley in No. 5 action. She won the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-4, but rebounded to gain the victory by winning the final set 10-4. Anderson fell in No. 6 singles to Kooyers, 6-3, 6-3. The win made it six in a row for the Southeast netters and head coach Mark Elliott. Saturday morning they will conclude their spring break play with a matchup against Middlebury at 9 a.m. EST from the Hilton Head Tennis Resort. The next home match will be an OVC contest against Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Redhawks Tennis Complex. |
