Redhawks Earn Fifth Conference Victory by Defeating Austin Peay, 6-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast tennis (11-10, 5-3 OVC) cruised past Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) foe Austin Peay, 6-1, Thursday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. The Redhawks won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests.

In doubles action, twins Bryce Kristal (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) and Drew Kristal (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) beat Mariana Pagan and Michelle Liew, 8-4 on the No. 1 contest. The tandem improved to 15-6 overall and 4-4 in OVC play this season. On the No. 2 court, Julia Masotti (Moji-Mirim, São Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Integral Aplicado) and Elise Nattier (Flora, Ill./Flora) earned the doubles point for Southeast with a dominating 8-0 victory over Virginia Penner and Laura Gonzalez. Together, they are now 9-8 in their first season playing doubles together. Seniors Luz Garcia (Bogota, Colombia/Troy) and Kimmy Anderson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) fell short in the No. 3 match, 8-4, to Isabel Rzezniczek and Beth Kistler.

The Redhawks were equally impressive in singles play. Bryce Kristal won her team-leading 15th match of 2007 in straight sets over Pagan, 6-3, 6-3 in No. 1 competition. She is 6-2 in OVC matches. Her sister, Drew Kristal, won the most exciting contest of the day with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win in a super tiebreaker against Rzezniczek on the No. 2 court. Her record improves to 5-3 in the OVC and 12-8 overall. Garcia was unable to overcome a sore ankle in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Liew from the No. 3 line. In the No. 4 match, Masotti won her ninth match of the season in straight sets versus Penner, 6-2, 6-3. Nattier equaled Bryce Kristal with her sixth conference victory of 2007 by defeating Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 play. Anderson made it a 6-1 victory for Southeast with her 6-0, 6-1 win against Kistler in the No. 6 match

Head coach Mark Elliott and the Redhawks are now 11-10 and 5-3 in the OVC in his first season with the program. On Tuesday, they travel to Charleston, Ill. to face OVC opponent Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. The following day, they will face Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. at the same time. Their final home match of the 2007 season is Saturday, April 14 vs. Eastern Kentucky. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. and it will mark the last home dual for seniors Luz Garcia and Kimmy Anderson.
