Tennis Narrowly Defeated By Austin Peay Short-handed Otahkians miss out on second OVC victory in 4-3 loss on Sunday.
April 7, 2002
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Still playing a player down, the Southeast Missouri tennis team once again put forth a great effort but fell just short of claiming their second Ohio Valley Conference victory on Sunday. Southeast dropped its second OVC match of the season 4-3 at Austin Peay. Southeast (2-11, 1-2 OVC) had junior Adrienne Bland back after she missed three matches due to cramping. Her precense in the number two position in singles allowed other players to move back into their regular positions. At the top of the lineup, number one player Daniela Garcia took APSU number one Judy Liwanpo to the three set limit but fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Bland also took her opponent to three sets but could not pull out the win, falling 4-6, 6-3 and 6-0. Although she ran out of gas at the end of the match she had no cramping which is a good sign for Southeast. Although close at the top of the lineup, Southeast made the most of the bottom part of its order. Andrea Aldana was once again strong, besting Jessie Mills 6-1 and 6-3. Cassie Foster, back in the number four spot, won 6-7, 6-1 and 6-1 and Kay Ehlke blasted Kelli Bridges 6-0 and 6-0. In doubles Aldana and Foster, who had experience at the number one spot last week when Bland was out, came through win another big victory 8-3. Garcia and Bland, however, fell to the Lady Govs's top tandem, 8-4 to give the match to APSU. Southeast was without walk-on Lara Golike, and because they did not have a number six player, forfeited the number six singles match and number three doubles match. Southeast will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Martin, Tenn. to battle the Skyhawks to UT-Martin at 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, the Otahkians will compete in their only home match of the Spring season, hosting Eastern Illinois at 2:00 p.m. at the Southeast Tennis Complex on the corner of Sprigg and Bertling. |
