Volleyball Drops Two Matches After Winning First of Season

Sept. 13, 2003

Box Score

After finally getting on the winning track in Friday's match against tournament host Drake, the Southeast Missouri State volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the Image Sport Bulldog Invitational against DePaul University and Louisiana Tech. Southeast finished third in the four-team tournament, and senior outside hitter Suzanne Gundlach was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In Saturday's first match, the Blue Demons of DePaul won 3-0 (32-30, 30-21, 30-25) with a strong hitting attack. Senior outside hitter Janet Cotter led DePaul with 19 kills, as her team had 62 total for the game. All-Tournament team members Amie West and Mandy Moorberg also put up big numbers. West had 52 assists and 14 digs, while Moorberg had 14 kills in the match.

Southeast, which hit only .081, had only one player reach double digits in kills. Gundlach had 11 kills for a .122 percentage. Senior setter Emily Scannell scored a double-double as she put up 26 assists and had 10 digs.

In Southeast's final match of the tournament, the Otahks again struggled, hitting only .088 and having only 27 digs in the match against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters.

Senior outside hitter Sarah Frost had 15 kills in the game and Scannell had 27 assists, but the offensive attack of the Lady Techsters was too much. Louisiana Tech hit .291 for the game, as they were led by tournament MVP Lia Mora. Her 37 assists helped hitters Joy Okpa and Cristine Sant' Anna reach double digits in kills. Okpa and Sant' Anna, both members of the All-Tournament Team, had 13 and 10 kills respectively.

For the weekend, Gundlach, the only Otahkian to be named to the All-Tournament Team, had 34 kills and 29 digs, with one double-double. Scannell finished the tournament with 105 assists, 16 kills and 22 digs, and also had a double-double.

Next up for the Southeast squad will be Arkansas State. The Otahks will travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to play the Lady Indians at 7 p.m.
