Volleyball Falls To Murray State, 3-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Alison Mugler posted a match-best 15 kills and 24 digs as visiting Murray State posted a 3-1 (30-15, 30-27, 16-30, 30-21) win over Southeast Missouri State in an Ohio Valley Conference match this afternoon at Houck Fieldhouse. With the win, the Racers improve to 10-2 (2-0), while the Redhawks dropped to 7-8 (1-1) on the year.

Senior outside hitter Jessica Koeper (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) tallied a double-double of 15 kills and 18 digs along with five block assists to lead Southeast, while junior middle blocker Brenna Schlader (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) added 11 kills and five blocks (one solo, four assisted). Senior setter Jamie Baumstark (Hermann, Mo./Hermann) also produced a double-double of her own with 41 assists and 11 digs. Freshman libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) had 17 digs and sophomore setter Alyssa Aston (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) added 11 digs.

Murray State jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first game on three straight kills by Mugler, but the Redhawks would close to within 17-11 on consecutive hitting errors by the Racers. A kill by Katie Kemzys opened a 13-2 run that handed Murray State a 1-0 advantage in the match. In the second game, Southeast captured a 6-2 lead two kills from Schlader and a solo block from junior outside hitter Brittany Hastings (Wichita, Kan./Circle). A 21-17 scoring drive helped Murray State tie the score at 23-23 on a kill by Kemzys. The Racers clinched a 2-0 lead heading to intermission by scoring seven of the game's final 11 points, culminated with a kill by Holly Jansen.

A Koeper kill broke an early 5-5 tie in the third game and Southeast later claimed a 7-5 lead on a kill from sophomore middle blocker Katrina Niemeyer (Germantown, Ill./Mater Dei). The Redhawks later increased their leading margin to 12-10 on a Schlader kill and a service ace from Baumstark. After Murray State sliced its deficit to 14-12 on a kill by Alyssa Groves, Southeast finished the stanza with a game-closing 16-4 run which closed its deficit at 2-1.The Racers opened the fourth game with a 18-10 lead on kills from Groves and Kemzys and later increased their lead to 22-14 on another Jansen kill. Murray State finished the match by scoring eight of the final 15 points, including a match-ending kill by Jensen.

In addition to Mugler, Murray State also received double-double efforts from Groves (10 kills, 10 digs), Tara DeMage (11 kills, 11 digs) and Cassie Chesney (58 assists, 13 digs). Heather Norris posted 18 digs and Kemzys recorded three solo blocks for the Racers.

The Redhawks are back in action on Sept. 29 with an OVC contest at Eastern Kentucky.
