Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision To Morehead State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Juniors Ashley Doscher (20 kills, 12 digs) and Katelyn Barbour (47 assists, 12 digs) tallied double-doubles in leading visiting Morehead State to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-24) victory over Southeast Missouri State in an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball contest tonight at Houck Stadium. The Eagles improve to 11-5 (4-0), while the Redhawks fall to 7-9 (3-3) on the season.

Junior setter Alyssa Aston (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) led Southeast with a double-double of 24 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore right side hitter Karleigh DeLong (Corona, Calif./Santiago) recorded 11 kills and junior middle blocker Kim Unnerstall (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) added five block assists. Sophomore libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) tallied a match-best 17 digs.

In the first game, the Redhawks claimed an early 9-7 advantage on a Morehead hitting error. The Eagles broke a 10-10 tie by scoring seven of the next 12 points to produce a 17-15 advantage on a Redhawk hitting error. Southeast regrouped with a short 9-6 run to claim a 24-23 advantage on a DeLong service ace. Morehead State closed the stanza by scoring seven of the last 10 points to gain a 1-0 advantage, culminated on a kill from sophomore Amber Campbell.

A service ace from junior Katelyn Barbour gave the visitors an 11-9 lead in the second game and later gained a 12-10 advantage on a kill from junior Ashley Doscher. A 7-4 run helped Morehead State claim a 21-14 lead on another Doscher kill. The Redhawks then used a 7-3 run to slice their deficit to 24-21 that ended with a block from DeLong and freshman outside hitter Claire Keaton (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word). The Eagles scored six of the final 11 points to take a two-game lead into intermission.

Morehead State snapped a 5-5 tie in the third game by scoring six of the next 10 points to take an 11-8 lead on a Southeast hitting error. An 11-8 scoring drive later helped propel the Redhawks to a 19-16 which ended on a kill from Unnerstall. The Eagles rebounded from a 20-18 deficit with a 10-6 run, highlighted by two kills from Campbell and freshman Kaitlin Craven to end the match.

Junior Erin Peak added 12 kills and nine digs, while Campbell contributed four blocks for Morehead State. Sophomore Kristina Schoo tallied 13 digs and freshman Kirstie Brangers posted three service aces.

The Redhawks close their five-match homestand tomorrow afternoon with an OVC contest against Eastern Kentucky with a start time of 2 p.m.
