Southeast Volleyball Loses to 17-1 Memphis

Oct. 5, 2003

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Despite a 3-13 record coming into its match against 16-1 Memphis, the Southeast Missouri volleyball team put up a strong fight against the hard-hitting Tigers. Memphis won the match 3-1 (30-28, 30-26, 25-30, 30-27).

The Otahkians showed much fight as they were close in each game. Down two games to none, Southeast led game three 22-18 and managed to fight off a late-game comeback to win it 30-25. In game four, Memphis appeared to have the game in control, but a late comeback nearly sent the match to a deciding game five. However, the powerful attack of Tiara Gilkey and Brittany Barnett closed out the match with a 30-27 win.

For Southeast, senior Suzanne Gundlach led the way with 13 kills and a .217 hitting percentage. Gundlach also posted 12 digs. Senior Sarah Frost added 10 kills in the match. The Otahks hit a strong .243 for the match. Setter Emily Scannell had 42 assists as well as seven kills and a team-high 14 digs.

Defensively, the Otahks had a strong all-around game. The squad scored 16 blocks in the match, and four players reached double-digits in digs. Along with Scannell and Gundlach, Jill Miller and Danielle Pegram each had 10 digs. All together, Southeast had 67 digs in the match. During the month of October, all digs registered by Southeast during home matches help raise funds for Dig For Life. Dig For Life is a program, founded by head coach Cindy Gannon, that raises money for breast cancer awareness. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Southeast will have three more home matches this month.

With the win, Memphis extends its winning streak to 14 games. Southeast will next head on the road for the next five matches. The Otahks will play Tennessee Tech Oct. 10 and Austin Peay Oct. 11.
