Redhawks Make Quick Work of Tigers

(Friday, Oct. 10, 2008) - The Redhawks volleyball team quickly defeated their Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee State as they won in straight-sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) to open up their three game home stand and improve to 5-2 in the OVC. The Redhawks (7-6, 5-2 OVC) opened up the first set against the Tigers (4-10, 3-4 OVC) on a 12-3 run, which was capped by a Claire Keaton block, to take a commanding lead that they would never relinquish. A 3-0 rally finished off the Tigers, as a Karleigh DeLong kill ended the first set. The Redhawks defense held the Tigers to a .000 attack percentage in the first set, while the Redhawks compiled an attack percentage of .300. The Tigers battled back in the second set closing to within one 11-10 in favor of the Redhawks. The Redhawks than turned it on and went on a 5-1 run capped by a service ace by Molly Davis to give the Redhawks a 15-11 lead. The Redhawks would finish off the Tigers in the second set identically to the first with a Delong kill. Emily Hughes recorded a set high four kills for the Redhawks who turned in an attack percentage of .417. Sarah Barth chipped in with a team high 12 assists in the set. Set three started with the two teams going back and forth. With the set tied at 10-10 the Redhawks went on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Delong service ace, giving the Redhawks a 15-10 lead and putting a strangle hold on the Tigers. The Redhawks would win the final four points to complete the straight-set victory. Junior setter Barth led the Redhawks with a match-high 26 assists. Barth also recorded six kills and six assists. Davis recorded a match-high 12 digs. Delong pitched in with 10 digs of her own to go along with seven assists. Both recorded a match-high two service aces. Keaton had a match high 12 kills as she recorded an attack percentage of .450. Hughes and Paige Dossey each also had an attack percentage of at least .400 as the Redhawks turned in a season best attack percentage of .326. Yamari Collazo recorded a team high 17 assists and eight digs for the Tigers. Candace Saleaumua led the Tigers with eight kills. The Redhawks will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Austin Peay with a start time of 2 pm. |
