Redhawks Lose in Straight Sets to Lady Govs

By: Bryce Weymouth, Sport Information Assistant CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008) - The Redhawks dropped today’s match in straight-sets, 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 18-25) to Austin Peay. The loss drops the Redhawks to 5-3 in OVC play and 1-1 on their current three game homestand. Set one was an up and down battle for the Redhawks (7-7, 5-3 OVC) as they would end up dropping the set 22-25 after a hard fought battle. The Lady Govs (14-6, 5-3 OVC) would quickly take control of the first set as they jumped out to an early 6-11 lead that was capped off by a Kayla Grantham service ace. The Lady Govs expanded their lead to 14-21 before the Redhawks went on a 6-0 run that ended with a Claire Keaton kill to get within one at 20-21. The Lady Govs ended up pulling out the first set as the Redhawks comeback fell short after Stephanie Champine ended the set with her fifth kill of the set. The Redhawks recorded an attack percentage of .371 in the first set, which was led by Claire Keaton who had an attack percentage of .750 and six kills. Sarah Barth chipped in with 10 assists and Molly Davis added a set-high four digs. The Lady Govs posted an attack percentage of .342 as Jessica Mollman, Kirstin Distler and Taylor Skinner all recorded attack percentages of at least .400. Set two was a close battle the whole way through as the teams combined for five ties and one lead change. The Redhawks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after Aubrey Dondlinger recorded her first of four kills for the set. The set continued to be close as Dondlinger recorded yet another kill to pull the Redhawks back within one at 10-11. The Lady Govs would end up finishing off the set on a 4-2 run capped off by a Distler kill to give the Lady Govs the set 22-25. Both teams compiled high attack percentages as the Lady Govs recorded a .385 and the Redhawks turned in one of .432. Keaton led the Redhawks with five kills as Barth chipped in with 13 more assists. Karleigh DeLong logged four digs. Skinner led the Lady Govs with six kills in set two, as Sarah Alisaleh recorded 10 assists and Marie Mullins recorded seven assists of her own. Set three was much like the first set as the Lady Govs jumped out to an early 4-9 lead. The Redhawks would fight back to get within four, after a block by Paige Dossey, to close the gap to 8-12. The Lady Govs would take control from there as they expanded their lead to 14-23 before closing out the final set 18-25. Dondlinger would lead the Redhawks in the third set with four kills. Barth chipped in with nine assists, to give her a total and match-high of 32 assists. Barth also recorded eight kills for the match. Davis recorded 10 digs for the Redhawks. For Davis it was her seventh-straight game with double-digit digs. DeLong ended the match with nine kills and six digs. Keaton led the way for the Redhawks with 12 kills as Dondlinger logged 11 kills of her own. The Redhawks turned in a seasons-best .327 attack percentage. The Lady Govs had an attack percentage of .348 as Champine (11 kills), Distler (12 kills), Mollman (10 kills) and Skinner (10 kills) dominated the net. The Redhawks will look to bounce back on Wednesday night as they host Saint Louis University at 7pm. |
