Redhawks Capture 3-1 Victory At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Four players tallied double-doubles as Southeast Missouri State volleyball posted a 3-1 (23-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-25) victory over Samford in Ohio Valley Conference play Friday night at Siebert Gym in Birmingham, Ala. The Redhawks improve to 11-10 (6-4), while the Bulldogs fall to 8-10 (3-6).

Sophomore right side hitter Karleigh DeLong (Corona, Calif./Santiago) led Southeast with 18 kills and added 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Aubrey Dondlinger (Palos Heights, Ill./Parkland CC) contributed 15 kills and 18 digs. Freshman outside hitter Claire Keaton (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) produced 13 kills and 16 digs in addition to sophomore setter Sarah Barth (Germantown, Ill./Central) posting 51 assists and 17 digs. Sophomore libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) added 23 digs for Southeast.

The visitors captured an early 5-3 lead in the first game on a kill from junior middle blocker Kim Unnerstall (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). Both teams later battled through 12 ties before the Bulldogs broke a 19-19 tie with an 11-5 scoring drive, highlighted by a pair of service aces from sophomore Sarah Gardner, to gain a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Southeast kicked off the second game with an early 4-1 lead thanks to a Keaton kill and hiked its advantage at 8-3 on a kill by Unnerstall. Back-to-back Keaton kills later gave the Redhawks their biggest lead of the stanza at 20-12 and the visitors tallied 10 of the final 19 points to tie the match at 1-1 entering intermission.

In the third game, the Redhawks grabbed a 3-0 lead on a kill by Unnerstall and increased their leading margin to 6-2 on a DeLong kill. Samford responded with a 9-3 run with three kills coming from senior Angela Dempski to post an 11-9 lead. Southeast then notched a 20-7 scoring drive with three kills coming from DeLong and Keaton to take its biggest lead in the game via a 29-18 margin. After a Redhawk hitting error and a block brought the host team to within 29-21, Unnerstall hand the visitors a 2-1 lead with a kill.

Samford plowed its way to a 5-0 advantage with Dempski providing a pair of kills and a solo block, but Southeast used a scored 15 of the next 25 points to even the score at 15-all. Kills from Barth and DeLong jumpstarted a 9-4 run that gave the Redhawks a 25-21 lead. After freshman Hillary Fountain's kill pulled the Bulldogs within 26-23, the visitors scored four of the final six points to win the match.

Junior Sheriden Stangohr recorded a match-high 19 kills to lead Samford, while Dempski finished with 18 kills on the night. Junior Sara Sears produced a double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs, while Fountain notched a match-best 58 assists and 10 digs. Junior Courtney Gay added a match-high 23 digs for the Bulldogs.

The Redhawks are back in action this afternoon with an OVC contest at defending conference champion Jacksonville State with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
