Jacksonville State Outhits Otahks

After sweeping Tennessee State Thursday night, the squad hoped to take its momentum to Alabama where they would play Jacksonville State and Samford. However, after taking the first game against the Gamecocks of JSU (14-6, 4-3 OVC), the Southeast volleyball team dropped the match 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 30-20, 30-25). So far this year, the Otahkians (5-16, 4-4 OVC) have yet to put a winning streak together.

For the match Southeast was outhit .291 to .172. The Otahks did however have three players reach double digits in kills. For the 10th time this season Sarah Frost reached that plateau. The senior outside hitter led the squad with 15 kills and a .244 hitting percentage. Freshman Danielle Pegram scored 12 kills and a .550 PCT, as well as posting a team-high six blocks. And for the 10th time this season, senior outside hitter Suzanne Gundlach posted a double-double, scoring 10 kills and 13 digs.

Senior Emily Scannell just missed out on her 10th double-double as she had 35 assists and nine digs. Southeast picked up 61 digs on the night as Jill Miller led the way for the second night in a row with 14.

Jacksonville State also had three players reach the double digit plateau in kills in the match as Suzi Terrell led all scorers with 20 kills. Shari Weyer had 17 and Christina Cary had 14. The Cocks scored 74 kills on the night compared to 45 for Southeast. JSU also had a trio of players with 10 or more digs. Kisha West led all players with 24 digs on the night, and Jessica Starck and Jennifer Brenneman had 11 and 10, respectively.

Southeast will next travel to Birmingham, Ala., to play the Bulldogs of Samford. The game will be at 4 p.m. After that, Southeast will return home for a five-game homestand starting Tuesday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
