Redhawks Close Regular Season with 3-0 Victory Over Bulldogs

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Friday, November 11, 2005) The Redhawks volleyball team closed the 2005 regular season with a .500 record for the first time since the 2001 season with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-26, 32-30) win over Ohio Valley Conference opponent Samford at Houck Field House on Friday night. The win gave the Redhawks a 15-15 overall record and the No. 5 seed as they head to the OVC Championship Tournament next weekend in Charleston, Illinois.
The Redhawks (15-15, 11-5 OVC) took command of the match from the get go as they opened game one with a quick 4-0 lead which later became 8-3. The Redhawks then proceeded to trounce the Bulldogs (9-20, 5-10 OVC) 30-12 thanks in large part to a 14-1 run.
The 12 points scored by the Bulldogs are the second lowest total the Redhawks have held a team to in a single game.
The Redhawks had an attack percentage of .310 in the opening game while holding the Bulldogs to a negative .182 attack percentage. The Bulldogs had only six kills while committing 12 attack errors in the opening game.
Game two was much closer as the Redhawks grabbed a six-point lead, 20-14 but the Bulldogs managed to rally to cut the lead to three points, 27-24. However, thanks in large part to a .400 attack percentage the Redhawks held on for the 30-26 game two win.
The Bulldogs showed life in game three as they jumped ahead quickly 5-0 and latter grabbed a six-point lead (their largest lead in any game) 13-7. The Redhawks chipped away eventually tying the game 18-18. The Redhawks eventually grabbed their first lead of the game when they went ahead 21-20. After grabbing a three-point lead, 23-20 the Bulldogs rallied to regain the lead and set up game point for them at 29-27. The Redhawks did not quit and recorded three-straight points to pull ahead and set up their own match-point. After a Bulldogs sideout the Redhawks recorded back-to-back points for the game and match victory.
Overall the Redhawks recorded an attack percentage of .323 which is the second best mark for the team this season. The Bulldogs were held to a .164 attack percentage.
Senior Jill Miller (Muncie, IN/Muncie Central), playing for the final time in Houck Field House, said goodbye to the home crowd in style as she recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs. She also recorded an attack percentage of .417.
Jessica Koeper (Jackson, MO/Jackson) finished with a match-high 15 kills as she recorded an attack percentage of .364.
Sophomore Brittany Hastings (Wichita, KS/Circle H.S.) recorded her seventh double-digit kill match of the season as she finished with 10 kills while hitting a match-high .444.
Setter Jamie Baumstark (Hermann, MO/Hermann) finished with a team-high 31 assists.
Freshman Katrina Niemeyer (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) tied a career-high with seven blocks which see set earlier this season against the Bulldogs.
Lauren Scannell (Belleville, IL/Southwestern Illinois College) saw her streak of double-digit dig matches snapped at 33-straight matches as she came up one dig short with nine total digs.
The Bulldogs were led by Jackie Jaszcz who finished with an assist/dig double-double with a match high 34 assists and 12 digs. She also added a match-high three service aces.
Freshman Sara Sears led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and Courtney Gay finished with a match-high 19 digs.
The loss eliminated the Bulldogs for the No. 6 seed in the OVC Tournament.
