Redhawks Advance to OVC Semifinals with 3-2 Win Over Panthers

CHARLESTON, Ill. - (Friday, November 18, 2005) The 5th seeded Redhawks volleyball team defeated 4th seed Eastern Illinois, 3-2 (30-27, 25-30, 30-21, 24-30, 15-8) in a thrilling first round match of the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament to advance to take on No. 1 seed Eastern Kentucky in tomorrow's semifinal.

Game one was highly competitive as expected as both teams exchanged points. The Redhawks (16-15) built a 20-17 lead for the largest lead by either team in the game. The Panthers (16-9) rallied and tied the game at 26-apiece but the Redhawks went on a 4-1 run to end the game capped by a Sirma Ozenir (Izmir, Turkey/Izmir Karsiyaka) ace. The Redhawks had an attack percentage of .286 recording 19 kills and only three errors. Jill Miller (Muncie, IN/Muncie Central) had seven those kills as she hit .389. Lauren Scannell (Belleville, IL/Southwestern Illinois College) had 11 digs.

The Panthers came out in game two in search of redemption jumping out to an early 5-3 lead. The Redhawks managed to grab a 6-5 lead but the Panthers stormed back to regain the lead and later pushed that lead to seven points, 24-17. The Redhawks cut into lead making it 24-21 but that would be as close as they would make it as the Panthers held on for the 30-25 win.

Miller continued her hot play with nine of the team's 16 kills in the second game. As a team the Redhawks had an attack percentage of .231.

Redhawks responded in game three with a quick 6-3 lead. The Panthers rallied to grab a 8-7 lead before the Redhawks roared off 10-1 run and never looked back as they led by as much as 11 points 27-16 before coasting to the 30-21 game three win.

Jessica Koeper (Jackson, MO/Jackson) led the way with six kills as the team hit .273 and held the Panthers to a .044 attack percentage forcing them into 11 attack errors.

The Panthers easily took game four 30-24 as the Redhawks managed to grab only one lead early in the game.

The Panthers hit a scorching .382 from the attack line as they recorded 28 kills. The Redhawks only managed 11 kills while hitting .244.

The Redhawks came out the aggressors in the fifth and deciding game as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead highlighted by a Jamie Baumstark (Hermann, MO/Hermann) service ace. The Redhawks were the first team to eight points to force the changing of court sides and closed the game and match with a 7-2 run.

All-OVC First Teamer Koeper recorded her first career 20/20 match with 20 kills and a career-high 28 digs. It was her team-high 20th double-double of the season and her sixth 20+ kill match of the season.

Miller finished with a match-high 26 kills. The 26 kills is also a new career-high for the senior co-captain. She also recorded 15 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. She finished with a team-high .383 attack percentage.

Baumstark came up short of her fourth triple-double of the season as she finished with a team-high 58 assists, 14 digs and eight kills. It was Baumstark's 10th match with 50 or more assists this season. She also added two service aces and hit .368.

Scannell recorded her third 30+ dig match of the season as she finished with a team-high 31 digs.

Ozenir made her first start in over two months and provided a spark from both the defensive side and from the service line. She finished with 10 digs.

Brenna Schlader (Columbia, MO/Hickman) finished with a match-high seven blocks and added nine kills.

As a team the Redhawks had an attack percentage of .278 and committed only 14 attack errors in the match.

The Panthers five players finish with double-digit kills with Kara Sorenson and Kera Griffin each leading the team with 18 kills. Caitlin Balsam had a double-double with 16 kills and 18 digs. Maren Crabtree finished with a match-high 72 assists and also added 18 digs. Heather Redenbo finished with a match-high 32 digs as the Panthers collected 115 digs as a team.

The Redhawks will face the Lady Colonels tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Illinois.
