Redhawks Picked Sixth In Preseason OVC Volleyball Poll

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State volleyball has been picked to finish sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, released today by the conference office. The Redhawks tallied 125 points in the annual poll that was voted on by the conference's 11 head coaches and sports information directors.

Jacksonville State, the defending OVC champions, was picked as the favorite to win its second consecutive conference title with 197 points and garnered a whopping 18 first-place votes. Morehead State captured second with 160 points and three first-place votes, while Eastern Kentucky was selected third with 175 points. Tennessee State (Fourth - 134 points) and Murray State (Fifth - 133 points) also finished in the top five. Following Southeast was Tennessee Tech in seventh with 103 points and Tennessee-Martin claimed 96 points for eighth place. Rounding out the poll are Eastern Illinois (Ninth - 63 points), Samford (10th - 33 points) and Austin Peay (11th - 30 points).

The Redhawks produced a 16-18 overall record with an 8-8 mark in conference play last season and advanced to the OVC Tournament championship match for the first time since 2002.

Senior middle blocker Brenna Schlader (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) earned her first conference accolade as she was named Second Team Preseason All-OVC. Schlader finished eighth in the conference in blocks with a 0.94 per game average and led Southeast with a .227 hitting percentage. She also finished second on the team in hitting with a 2.83 kill-per-game average.

Southeast begins the 2007 season on Aug. 24-25 against nationally-ranked Ohio State, Ball State and Maine at the Nike/Active Ankle Invitational in Muncie, Ind.
