CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - While preparing for Friday's season-opening contest against No. 16 Ohio State, GoSoutheast.com recently sat down with Redhawks volleyball head coach Renata Nowacki during Tuesday's media day festivities to discuss her thoughts on the team after completing the preseason training camp:

On this year's newcomers...

"I'm very pleased with what the newcomers have brought to the team. Claire (Keaton), Aubrey (Dondlinger) and Emily (Hughes) are going to impact our offense immediately and they will have the opportunity to gain valuable playing time this weekend at the Ball State Tournament. Kelly Benacka will continue to challenge Molly Davis for time at the libero position."

On being picked sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll...

"I'm okay with being picked sixth in the OVC preseason poll because it's how you finish in the end. I don't anticipate that we'll finish that way at the end of the season. We've set our goals higher than sixth in the conference."

On the team's progress...

"I think across the board we have a lot more team accountability than in previous years and it is helping us seek greater and quicker improvements in practice."

On facing nationally-ranked Ohio State in season opener...

"We're excited to open up with a national powerhouse such as Ohio State. They will definitely challenge us to play our best volleyball for an entire match. A match versus Ohio State will better prepare us for the rest of the season."

On the team's hard work in training camp and practice...

"We feel like we're getting a lot of intensity and quality contacts from our team. We were limited a few times in training camp due to minor nagging injuries, but we feel like everyday we step into the gym that we're getting better."

On the team's strength entering the year...

"Our strength this year is our depth. Our talent will be distributed among the seven players on the floor more than having two key players as we did last year with Jamie (Baumstark) and Jessie (Koeper)."
