Freshman Julie Shives Named OVC Setter of the Week

By Bo BuntonSoutheast Missouri State Sports Information CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - The Ohio Valley Conference office has announced that freshman Julie Shives from Grove City, Ohio has been named Setter of the Week. Shives helped the Redhawks capture the Bradley Kickoff Classic this past weekend. Southeast went 2-1 this past weekend, beating Western Illinois and Bradley. USC-Upstate handed the Redhawks their first loss with a 3-1 score in the first match of the tournament. Southeast bounced back with back-to-back wins on Saturday. The team won three straight sets to capture the tournament title against host Bradley after dropping the first set 25-15. Shives totaled 114 assists for a 9.50 per set average and 34 digs over the three match span. She had two assist/dig double-doubles, narrowly missing a third double-double with nine digs against Western Illinois. Offensively, she averaged 1.17 kills per set, while hitting .297 from the attack line. Behind the service line, she totaled seven service aces. In the first match of the season and her career, Shives recorded 34 assists and ten digs. The Redhawks had a team hitting percentage of .148, a percentage that would increase in each match. She also had five kills on nine attempts, while serving one ace. In the team's victory against Western Illinois, Shives finished with a team-high 31 assists while adding nine digs, helping the team to a .188 hitting percentage. She had five kills in 12 attempts, for a .417 attack percentage. Shives, who is only 5-8, assisted on two blocks and recorded three aces. Against Bradley, she posted her best match of the tournament. She upped her assists to 49 on the match and had 16 digs for her second double-double in three matches. The teams hitting percentage was .243, the best out of the three matches. Shives again served three aces and had four kills on 16 attempts. For her efforts, she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Head Coach Renata Heard said that by the end of the tournament she did not look like a newcomer. "Julie has a very bright future ahead of her," said Coach Heard. "I look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in her career." |
