Southeast Missouri State volleyball begins a stretch of playing four of its next five matches on the road beginning with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference midweek matches this week. The Redhawks head to Kentucky on Tuesday, Oct. 2 for a conference showdown against Murray State with the first serve set for 7 p.m. Southeast then travels to Austin Peay on Thursday, Oct. 4 with a start time of 7 p.m.
Scouting The Redhawks
Southeast brings an 8-9 season record and has posted a 4-3 conference ledger entering this week's matches in addition to winning five of its last seven contests. The Redhawks took two out of three matches last week to conclude their five-match homestand with wins over Memphis (3-2) and Eastern Kentucky (3-0) sandwiched with a 3-0 defeat against OVC leader Morehead State. Junior outside hitter Aubrey Dondlinger leads Southeast with 208 kills (3.35 kpg), while sophomore right side hitter Karleigh DeLong currently ranks second on the team in both kills (196 - 3.63 kpg) and digs (169 - 3.13 dpg). Sophomore setter Sarah Barth has amassed a team-high 493 assists (9.86 apg) on the year. Senior middle blocker Brenna Schlader is the team leader with 54 blocks (11 solo, 53 assisted - 0.96 bpg) and 18 service aces (0.27 sapg) and sophomore libero Molly Davis has notched a team-best 322 digs (4.81 dpg) for the Redhawks.
Scouting The Racers
Murray State heads into the week sporting a record of 7-8, which includes a 4-2 record in OVC play. Last weekend, the Racers claimed a 3-2 road victory at Austin Peay to extend their winning streak. Junior outside hitter Alison Mugler has amassed a team-best 201 kills (3.59 kpg), while senior middle hitter Tara DeMage leads the Racers with 34 blocks (17 solo, 17 assisted - 0.61 bpg) and 22 service aces (0.39 sapg) in addition to posting a team-leading .264 hitting percentage. Junior libero Heather Norris leads Murray State with a team-best 309 digs (3.94 dpg) and has tied DeMage for the team service aces lead with 22 (0.39 sapg). Southeast graduate David Schwepker has posted a record of 125-131 in 10 seasons as Murray State's head coach.
Southeast leads the all-time series with Murray State by a 43-13 margin in the all-time series that includes wins in five of the last eight meetings since 2004. The Racers captured a 3-0 win in the teams' first meeting on Sept. 23 in Cape Girardeau. Last season, the Racers won both regular-season meetings, including a five-game victory at Racer Arena, before Southeast claimed a five-game win at the OVC Tournament in Jacksonville, Ala.
Scouting The Lady Govs
Austin Peay has amassed a 7-11 record and has produced a 2-4 mark against OVC opposition entering the week. The Lady Govs opened a five-match homestand last week with a 3-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin, but fell to Murray State in five games soon after. Senior outside hitter Dodi Szysmska has produced an OVC-leading 289 kills (4.45 kpg) and is rated third on the team with 202 digs (3.11 dpg). Freshman setter Sarah Alisaleh currently leads Austin Peay with 732 assists (11.62 apg) and 40 service aces (0.63 sapg), while freshman middle blocker Maegan Squibb has notched a team-high .331 hitting percentage. Senior libero Kristen Kirch has tallied 357 digs (5.34 dpg) on the season and freshman middle blocker Taylor Skinner has produced a team-best 30 blocks (seven solo, 23 assisted - 0.49 bpg). The Lady Govs are coached by Jenny Hazelwood, who is currently in her first season at the Clarksville, Tenn., school.
The Redhawks hold a 27-11 lifetime advantage against Austin Peay, including five of the last nine meetings since 2002. Both teams have split the last four meetings in Clarksville with Southeast posting a 3-1 win over the Lady Govs in 2005, the last match of the series to be played there. Last year, the Redhawks gained a 3-0 win in Cape Girardeau.
DeLong Gains First OVC Weekly Honor
Sophomore Karleigh DeLong was honored by the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday as she was named the conference's co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the award with Tennessee-Martin's Kathryn Sprague. The Corona, Calif., native averaged 4.25 kills, 0.83 blocks and 0.58 service aces per game last week with a pair of double-doubles in helping the Redhawks post a 2-1 record, including a five-game win over Memphis.
The Redhawks play three matches next week, beginning with a non-conference contest against Southern Illinois at Houck Fieldhouse on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Southeast then heads to Alabama for a pair of OVC matches at Samford on Oct. 12 starting at 7 p.m. and at Jacksonville State on Oct. 13 with a start time of 2 p.m.
