Hughes Named OVC Offensive Player of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (Monday, October 19, 2009) – For the second time this season junior Emily Hughes (St. Benedict/Memphis, Tenn.) has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week by league coaches. She was selected after leading the Redhawks to a pair of home victories last week and by averaging 4.83 kills per set, a .500 attack percentage and committing just one attack error in 56 total chances. In the Redhawks 3-0 win over SIU Edwardsville, Hughes recorded a match-best 16 kills while committing just one attack error for a season-high .536 attack percentage. She accounted for a match-high 17.5 points after also finishing with a match-best three block assists. The 16 kills are the most kills for Hughes in a three-set match this season. Against Eastern Illinois she helped the Redhawks win 3-0 over the Panthers, Hughes once again led the offense as she finished with a match-best 13 kills while not committing a single attack error. She finished with a match-best .464 attack percentage. She also chipped in a match-high four block assists and led all players with 15 points. Hughes leads the team and ranks second in the OVC with a .289 attack percentage. She also leads the team in total kills with 237 (sixth in the OVC) and blocks per set with 0.68 per set. She ranks second on the team and eighth in the OVC with a 3.20 kills per set average. Hughes was named the OVC Offensive Player of the Week on the season’s opening week. She is the third different Redhawks player to garner OVC weekly honors. Senior Molly Davis (Burris/Muncie, Ind.) has been named the OVC’s Defensive Player of the Week three times and Sarah Barth was named the OVC’s Setter of the Week on August 31. Hughes is one of just two players to be named OVC Offensive Player of the Week on multiple occasions this season. Austin Peay’s Stephanie Champine has won the weekly honor three times. Hughes and her Redhawks teammates conclude their five-match homestand on Tuesday evening as they host non-conference regional rival Southern Illinois University at Carbondale at Houck Field House.
