Redhawks Host Jacksonville State and Samford In OVC Volleyball Action This Weekend
Oct. 19, 2006 CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State volleyball returns to Houck Stadium for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference contests during homecoming weekend. The Redhawks battle Jacksonville State, the defending OVC tournament champions, on Friday at 7 p.m., while Samford hits campus for a Saturday evening match with a start time of 5 p.m. Southeast enters the weekend with a record of 10-12 season record on the year and has a 4-4 ledger in OVC play. The Redhawks have dropped their last three matches after falling on the road last weekend at Murray State in five games and UT Martin in four games. Senior outside hitter Jessica Koeper currently paces Southeast with a team-high 349 kills and 315 digs on the season. Currently on a nine-match winning streak, Jacksonville State brings a 14-4 mark, including a perfect 8-0 record against OVC competition. Last weekend, the Gamecocks posted a pair of three-game sweeps at home against Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. Leading the way for JSU is junior middle blocker/outside hitter Abbey Breit, who has tallied 359 kills for a league-leading 5.61 kill-per-game average and 51 blocks. Samford sports a 6-16 season ledger on the year, which includes a 1-7 mark in the OVC. The Bulldogs are on a two-match losing skid and have lost seven of their last contests heading into Friday's match at Eastern Illinois. Samford is led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Sara Sears' 215 kills and 29 blocks. Southeast concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a trip to Saint Louis on Oct. 25 with the first serve set for 7 p.m. |
